Being unemployed in a society that sees a man as a provider (how society killed a black man)

This is surely a recipe of how to kill a black young man, leave him in the hands of society and forget to ask how are you coping? Let us talk about the pressure young men are subjected to, oh no let us talk about the expectations. I want you to look at this from my point of view, not because it is the best view but because from this point of view you will understand why I blame society for crime, suicide and drugs.

The debate of what defines a good man is closed, he must have money provide for his family and generally afford (to be noticed by women, or just to stand a chance of getting his fair share of women) that is what society dictates. The assumed to be successful Sipho from down the street driving a convertible and staying in centurion has become a benchmark of what a man must be, how he must live and what he should drive. Society silently screams to the broke Dimo you are a looser, you are lazy and not that smart.

This drive ordinary Dimo trying life and dropping 200 CV’s a week into a corner, it is either he is going to wait for luck to turn his way or he is going to do something. Let me give you a background of the Dimo I’m referring to, he is a black graduate or he is in possession of matric but couldn’t further his studies or a high school drop-out. So now he is trying to do something with his life but the pressure keeps mounting. He is constantly reminded what people his age group have achieved, every second post on Facebook is a pun directed at him and everyone in his situation. Then society looks at me with that “it is not my fault look” when Dimo starts stealing so he can provide (did you know more men are arrested for stealing than women), when he realizes the only way out is to constantly be high on drugs or to put an end to this misery. Did you know that more black young man are hooked on drugs than women? And depart this world (did you know for every one women who commit suicide 3 more men commit suicide).

Times are hard and the best thing we can do is to be considerate. And to the successful Sipho I am not jealous Bro! I just wish you can stop rubbing it in my face (stop telling my Girl I’m broke coz she knows it already) to the family members stop comparing us to others as we have enough pressure already. To the ladies we get it you don’t do broke men so why sing about it on social media??

  1. Thank you. The ending was too abrupt I think. I would have loved to read more on the subject. I concur a hundred percent… The world has no sympathy for young black men… Sad days, these.
