The Hidden Pan African Flag In Black Panther

1. Okoye, T’Challa and Nakia’s wardrobe represented the Pan-African flag’s colors: red, black and green.

One thing that was hidden in plain sight if I may in Black Panther was Okoye, T’Challa and Nakia’s wardrobe colors which represented the Pan-African flag’s colors being Red, Black and Green.

In a video for Vanity Fair, director Ryan Coogler broke down the climactic South Korea casino fight scene featuring T’Challa, Okoye, Nakia, Klaue and Agent Ross. Coogler drops many hidden gems in the clip, and one of them has to do with the wardrobe of the three Wakandans. T’Challa is wearing black, Okoye is wearing red and Nakia is wearing green. Combine those three colors together and you have the colors of the Pan-African flag.

One has to appreciate the level of detail that went into the making of Black Panther and one of them being during the Casino fight scene.

Another takeaway from the fight scene is how Okeye the general leader of the Dora Milaje was the only one in the Casino who was wearing the colour red with a bit of gold, this was to represent the power she held within the Wakandans as a general and with the gold finish on her dress highlighting somewhat of a ranking system within the Wakandans.
Another thing to take note of is how Klaue wore blue in the casino scene, the blue represents colonization. We know that Klaue wanted to profit off of Wakanda’s most cherished resource, vibranium. Think of how European countries profited from colonizing African countried and stealing their mineral resources!! This movie is LIFE!!

The only thing I found to be out of taste is how the white guy Agent Ross was brought to wakanda and was also given a mission to help stop the Wakandan war ships from leaving Wakanda. Can it just be a Wakandan affair without the white man having to play a role??? I don’t know maybe I’m reading too deep into it… I did however feel the tension in the cinema as I was sitting next to white folks the time T’challa’s little sister Shuri referred to agent Ross as a ‘Coloniser’ and the time Mbaku and his tribe silenced him while at the mountains.

I definitely have a new found respect for the genius that is Ryan Coogler the, the man who co-wrote and Directed Black Panther. Watch the space, if Black Panther does not dominate during next year’s Oscars then the system is definitely rigged! Ryan Coogler definitely deserves an Oscar!
