WHAT IS RELAY FOR LIFE?

CANSA Relay For Life is a unique event, supported by e.tv and
Bokomo Weet-Bix, offering everyone in a community the
opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Relay For
Life is a fun-filled, overnight team event that raises awareness of
cancer in the community and raises much needed funds to fight
cancer. The event is community and volunteer driven.
At the heart of Relay is the opportunity to celebrate cancer survivors, to
remember those who have left us and create awareness about cancer.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Teams of 10 – 15 people will take turns walking around a

track. Because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to
have a representative on the track at all times during the
12-hour event. Each team submits a commitment or
registration fee. Teams are then encouraged to raise funds
to support CANSA’s unique integrated service to the
public and all people affected by cancer. Otherwise team
members are free to socialise, picnic, play games,
dance and participate in lots of fun activities!
However, everybody in the community is
invited to come along and experience
this inspiring event of celebration
and commemoration. Two of the
highlights during the Relay event are the
Survivors’ Lap and the Luminaria Ceremony.

CELEBRATE
The Relay event opens with the moving
Survivors’ Lap, which is an inspirational start to
the event. This is where cancer survivors of all
ages are invited to begin the Relay by walking
the first lap of the course, cheered on by family,
friends, and teams from the community.

REMEMBER
The Luminaria Ceremony takes place later in the
evening when darkness begins to fall. Before the
event everyone in the community is invited to
dedicate a Luminaria bag to someone they know
who has been touched by cancer. As the evening
approaches, the candles are set around the track
and lit by participants. Everyone gathers round to
pay tribute and remember those lost to cancer,
support those fighting cancer and rejoice with
those who have fought the disease and won.
